Prepping for Made To Crave & Eating Right

2 Timothy 1:7  For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self discipline.

"Made To Crave" by Lysa TerKuerst is about more than just dieting, and to be effective for me, I know that I need to really step it up in the planning department.  I don’t know about you, but one of the biggest mistakes I can make when deciding to make solid eating changes is to not be prepared.  For some reason, I feel like I can just wake up in the morning and decide that I am going to eat right and it is going to work.  I have this great attitude, but when I look around the house and find that really I have nothing to eat because it is all way over the top when it comes to calories, I lose my inspiration almost immediately.

I also can't just remove the "bad stuff" in the house.  It has to be replaced by good options.  I also probably need to learn to sacrifice a little more time when it comes to preparation of food rather than rely on quick fixes.  Here are a few things on my eatin' good shopping list.

Fresh and frozen veggies, lemon (great for salad and water), rice cakes (sometimes I need a crunch-okay a lot of times), raw pecans and walnuts (these really keep me away from peanut butter which I never crave until I am on a diet), and some healthy frozen meals and soups (for those times when I am not terribly motivated to make lunch).

Even with this plan to stock up the cabinets with healthy food, I know that I often will crave certain things.   Here are a few swaps that I found that could help make the difference when it comes to sticking to healthier eating goals, but I am also working on keeping in mind that if for some reason I slip, it doesn't mean all is lost.  I can still get back on track.

Ice Cream - This is something that I can live without IF it isn't in my house, but if it is...I will eventually give in to ice cream's allure.  Instead of having ice cream on hand, keep frozen fruit like strawberries, blueberries and mangoes on hand.  Toss them in the blender with some skim milk for a smoothie or without the milk and make a sorbet.  You can also freeze and blend bananas to make an ice cream substitute with great results according to The Kitchen.

Chips - Rather than indulging in fried up potato chips bake kale chips or zucchini chips from home.  They really are very easy to make an a much lower calorie substitute. This can be really helpful if you are a salty snacker.

Flour Wraps and Hamburger Buns -Instead of flour wraps try green lettuce and Napa cabbage wraps.  I like that I can also use all the lettuce and cabbage this way, because what isn't used in a wrap is used in a salad.  I have also become fond of using green lettuce and Napa cabbage instead of taco shells.  I stay away from using iceberg lettuce for the most part, but they are really firm and work nicely instead of a hamburger bun.

Soda - Now this really isn't usually a big deal for me BUT when I cut it out, I think about it often.  Really the best thing to do is cut it out completely.  But if you really need bubbles go for sparkling water and add some lemon or fruit to it.  I have a Soda Stream, and a little flavored Stevia in the water makes a nice substitute as well.

Pasta - If you have yet to try spaghetti squash, this is the greatest substitute for pasta!  It is so easy to cook and it makes piles of "pasta."

Cheese Puffs - If you really want a snacky snack try Quaker's cheese rice cakes.  They have way less fat than cheese puffs but still have that cheesy and puffy thing going.  They make a great substitute especially when you check out the nutrition information between cheese puffs and the cheese rice cakes.

Don't forget to check back at the blog on Monday where I'll be sharing about my journey through Lysa TerKeurst's book "Made To Crave."  I'd love it if you came along! Learn more about Made To Crave here and download the Introduction here.

GREAT EVENT

You can be a part of helping New Life Pregnancy Center by attending their Concert for a Cause on Friday, August 3rd at Mountain Ridge Baptist Church in Glendale.  The concert is featuring Josh Wilson and opening act Cold Soup.  It is free and they are asking for donations of packs of diapers in sizes 3 to 5 for entries into a raffle.  You can get the complete details by following the link below.

With school about to start here in Arizona, there are a lot of great back-to-school shopping deals that you  might want to take advantage of for some future gift making.  The two things that spring to my mind are composition books and crayons.  You can buy both for a huge discount right now.

So what can you do with inexpensive composition books and crayons?  I always stock up on the composition books for note taking in church, journal writing, and for keeping track of tips that I find in magazines, newspapers, online and the news.  I glue the articles in the books and write in the other tips I find.  It is a nice way to keep track of the tips I find without holding onto the bulky magazines.  You can really jazz up the books too.  Here is a link to a tutorial from Squidoo on how to make an Altered Composition book

I have seen people melt broken crayons into cute little crayon shapes, but this page at Parenterest has many, many different craft ideas that you can turn into gifts that can be easily and cheaply made by utilizing those currently inexpensive crayons.  Maybe you can make some nice teacher gifts.

Colored pencils can also be picked up at a very reasonable price.  Kaboose has a really simple craft utilizing colored pencils to make a cute vase or pencil can.

Looking For Christian Connections for Your College Kids

Isaiah 54:13 ESV
All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.

As a mother of a teenager, I am often thinking about what is going to happen when he is off to college.  I have raised him up the best I can, and I know that he loves the Lord.  I also know that college is such a totally new experience for a child, and there are so many conflicting messages.  I really want to make sure that he can make some strong Christian connections when he is away on campus.

If this is something that you have thought about as well, I would like to share two sites with you that may give you some assistance in finding those connections for your child.

Campus Crusade for Christ at www.campuscrusadeforchrist.com is a campus ministry that has been around since the 1950s.  One of former interns is now on staff there after being involved with the ministry as a college student and then an intern.  They have a heart for the college student.  When at the site you can look up locations by entering the state your child will be going to college.

Live Above which can be found at www.liveabove.com is a resource for both students and parents to better prepare them for their college transition.   At Live Above, your child can also enter the school or location of the school they are going to attend and find Christian ministries that are involved with that school.  They also have a section for students to try to connect with Christian roommates.

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship can be found at www.intervarsity.org.  InterVarsity is a ministry that also focuses on college campuses and seeks to engage the campus culture with the love and message of Jesus Christ.

With these resources I feel more empowered with helping my son with his future transition into the college life.  I hope that they can help you as well.  -Kelly

I Love A Tip

**What works for me, is making my own chocolate syrup so I don't have to serve my family syrup made with artificial flavors and chemical enhancers...not to mention corn syrup. - Kelly

I am the type of person who is always looking for a way to make life a bit easier.  Because of that, I will fill scores of composition books with tips that I hear from friends, find online, or locate through magazines.  If you like to find easier ways to do things to, you should seriously check out We Are That Family. A wonderful website blog that shares some wonderful tips.  One of the things I really like about We Are That Family is that they have a wonderful blog carnival every Wednesday called "Works For Me Wednesday."  Works For Me Wednesday is a special spot where bloggers gather together all kinds of great tips and tricks for all things that make life easier.  It is like spending time with a group of friends who know a trick or two about EVERYTHING!  I love it!

If you are looking for ways to make life easier, look no further.  They also have an ebook of many of the great tips that have been shared over the last 5 years of their doing this wonderful blog carnival.  It is called That Works For Me.

Here are a couple of tips that I have found that I really like:

1- Put a wooden spoon over a pot that you are boiling water in.  It is supposed to keep it from boiling over.

2- Turn all your hangers inside.  As you take clothes out of the closet to wear, turn the hangers around.  After six months (or fewer) donate the clothes that have are on the hangers that are still not turned around.  I love that one for donating.  We also do not buy clothes unless we donate the same amount out.

You'll find lots more at their site.

Made To Crave 21 Day Challenge

**Taking this step by step. --Kelly

Psalm 37:4-5
"Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.  Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this."

I love these verses, and I will be focusing on them today as I attempt my first steps into readjusting my attitude towards food and the place that it should be in my life.  It is time to drop food down several notches in the chain of command.

Today I started reading Lysa TerKeurst's "21 Day Challenge" for a bit of a head start before really diving into her book "Made To Crave -Satisfying Your Deepest  Desire With God, Not Food."  Today Lysa's thought for the day was "Eating in its proper context is not the problem.  God gave us food for nourishment, strength, and even celebration.  But when pleasure becomes unrestrained, there's a problem."

Oh how well do I get that!  That pretty much describes much of my relationship with food or at least with the foods that I have issue with like carbs.  I can restrain myself for days, but once I go off and eat something like a cookie, it is like a door opens and I just cannot shut it.  I will not eat one cookie or even two.  I will probably work my way through seven cookies and then I will move on  to something salty to balance it out.  I will probably whirlwind my way through several different food items before finally just stopping because I am stuffed and gross.  Then I just feel horrible about myself.  That feeling does not help me stay on track.  In fact, messing up on a good eating plan is likely to get me to blow it for an entire day, because I will figure "What is the point?  I've already blown it."

Today I am realizing that I need to not focus on those feelings.  I need to make God my center, and put my feelings under His care.  I know it is all going to be baby steps for me, but without a step here and there, I am going to go nowhere.  Today is just the beginning.  Also as I have been learning to give my fears to God, I also need to give this struggle to Him.  I need God in this battle.  I also need the help and support of friends.  So if you would like, please come along.

As you read the book you will find that it is not about a diet plan.  That is for you to decide on with a doctor.  I have been thinking about what I would like to do.  I am going to attempt to do this without a gym.  The reason for that is that I want to do this without extra expenses.  We can't all afford to go to the gym, if you can, wonderful!  There is a $10 gym right by the station, and although I know that is something that I can swing, I still would like to at least do the next seven weeks on my own as far as working out goes.  You might also want to check out Sparkpeople.com.  It is a great place to get on track with fitness goals.  I just joined a Made To Crave group there for a little extra push.  Be sure to stop back on Monday for my next post.  I hope you come along!

You can sign up for the "21 Day Challenge" here and you will get each day emailed to you.  Learn more about "Made To Crave" here.  Download the Introduction to "Made To Crave" here

Will You Join Me on a Journey? Made To Crave

2 Timothy 1:7
For god did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self discipline.

I’ve got an invitation for you.  Monday, July 23rd I’m going to take a journey, and I would love and appreciate if you would like to come along.

I have lived a life where food was a major focus of mine.  I was anorexic when I was a teenager, throughout high school and in college. Food was my center.  As a teenager and young adult I turned away from food as a punishment to myself and as a way to show others how controlled I was and how adult.  How silly all that was!

As a much older adult and after a serious thyroid issue which caused my metabolism to flat line and myself to round out (the most graceful word I can choose), food became my enemy.  It was all consuming.  It didn't matter what I ate, I would gain weight.  It could taste good and fattening or bland and unsatisfying.  The result was all the same.  I don’t know when it took center stage in my life, but I know that it is time to take the big hook out and pull it off the stage so I can focus on the true center in my life God.

I have discovered that in my life, I have turned to food with my sorrows, joys and even loneliness when I should be turning to the creator of the universe the one who knows me best and loves me most, AND that means I need to be singularly focused, I need to be serious, and I need to be determined.  So I am going to be delving into the book "Made To Crave" by Lysa TerKeurst, and I would love for you to join me!  No really I would love it.  I really need a partner in this.

Monday, July 23rd we’ll start with beginning the 21 Day Challenge.  This challenge can get everyone’s feet wet and help you decide if you want to invest in the book itself.  You can even download the intro for free at the Made To Crave website just in case you want a little more.    Monday, July 31st, we'll start reading and working through the book.  Most studies I have found of Made To Crave are about six weeks.  We'll go seven to include the first part of the 21 Day Challenge.  If this speaks to you, I would love it if you would join me and be my accountability partner and I would be honored to be yours.  At the very least, check in every Monday and see how things are progressing.  :)

Well the links are above, and really they give you a perfect opportunity to learn a little bit more.  There is also a nice video from Lysa that could be a real blessing to you as well.

Tips for Taking Stress Down a Notch

**This picture just makes me think of a peaceful time.  I took it in Carmel, CA. -- Kelly :)

Sometimes I feel like part of the package deal that I received when I became an adult was a heaping helping of stress.  When I became a parent, I got an additional carry-on bag of it.  I don't mind, the benefits definitely outweigh the days of nagging stress, but it is still good to find ways to take the edge off.  Below are some tips that have worked for me and some I have read about and have yet to try.

First things first - Get into the word.  Having a few key verses on hand really helps me when I am struggling with unnecessary stress.  Jesus left us with His peace.  Let's cling to it!

Philippians 4:6-7 says -
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Matthew 11: 28-30 says -
"Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke fits perfectly, and the burden I give you is light."

John 14:27 says -
"I am leaving you with a gift--peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give isn't like the peace the world gives. So don't be troubled or afraid."

Psalm 4:8 says -
"I will lie down in peace and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, will keep me safe."

-Journal your worries.  Often when we write down what is causing us to stress out it takes some of the sting out of it.  Giving a voice to our concerns begins to take that power away.  I highly recommend a prayer journal.  When I pray to God about what is giving me anxiety, I feel better knowing that I am giving it to the creator of the universe.  And when it is behind me, I have a place to look back on when something else arises.

-Eat some yummy dark chocolate!  We know that dark chocolate gives us the warm fuzzies.  I think for ladies it is definitely a treat that can add an instant uplift because we simply love it, but it isn't just about taste.  Dark chocolate regulates the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body.  You shouldn't go overboard.   Take one square which is a little over one ounce for this benefit.  Check it all out at LiveStrong.com.

-Enjoy a simple hand massage.  We all love a nice relaxing shoulder or neck massage when we are stressed, but did you know that a hand massage for as little as five minute per hand can also reduce stress?  I grew up with a family who practiced reflexology, and I learned early on that a hand or foot massage could take away pain and also give us an energy boost.  It also apparently has a great relaxing effect on stress.  You can read all about it at NursingCenter.com.  The article in particular talks about massage therapy and includes the hands and feet.  Pretty easy.

-Be a kid again.  I am sure that I am not the only one that gets a little bit of joy out of a fresh box of crayons and a coloring book.  Sometimes I will even pick up vintage coloring books on ebay so I can enjoy some kid time.  Now that we are adults we are also usually much better at the task than we were as kids.  Give it a try.  I have no special links for this one.  It is really just a fact of life as far as I'm concerned.

-Dance the stress away.  If I put on a little 80s compilation CD and start dancing, the stress melts away.  Pick your music and dance for a song or two.  I'm not the only person who thinks that this is a good idea.  Check out SixWise.com for more information.  They get a little more in depth than I need.  Just give me a good tune.

Other things I like to do when feeling stressed:

-Pop in one of my favorite comedy DVDs.
-Watch funny animal videos on YouTube.  I can't help it.  I get all caught up in watching cute little kittens, puppies, and even that sweet little baby bear whose mama helped him get out of a garage he got stuck in.
-Sing and sing badly.  Yep, I kind of like singing badly which is good because I am quite good at it.  :)  The best way to do this is by finding some old songs from the 70s or 80s.  If you don't know the lyrics...make them up!
-Chew bubble gum.  I particularly am fond of chewing Bazooka gum.  The comics are corny, but they really make me laugh.
-Hug a family member.
-Have a pet?  Spend some time playing with it.  Not only will it make it happy, you will feel the benefits too.  Stressed at work?  Maybe you can get a therapy dog visit?  Check out this story of Cooper the therapy dog at from Harvard Health.

Job Hunting Tips

When I was in college, I took a two-day seminar on finding a job.  It was immensely helpful.  Since then even when I'm not job hunting, I have always kept an eye out for tips for job hunters.  Since my son is 17, I thought it would be a good idea to brush off some of the tips and share them here.  For all us parents out there with kids who may be looking and for all of us who might be looking ourselves.  These are all just random.

-The Hunt -
Certainly there are plenty of places to look for jobs from the newspaper to online searches, but one of the best things you can do for yourself before you even start that hunt is to think on the positive side.  Think about what it is you want and the goals you are looking to pursue rather than focusing on the negative from where you may have been.

Here are a couple sites beyond your newspaper:  Snagajob.com, SummerJobs.com, Simplyhired.com, and Linkup.com (great place for corporate listings).  Of course these are just a drop in the bucket.  There are lots of places out there.

- Resumes -
Getting a resume together is very important as well as figuring out the right style.  You can get a lot of hep online with loads of examples just by searching the internet.  You can also check out free sites like Resumizer.com.

- Job Interview -
Know your company.  It is vital that you know about the business that you are trying to become part of.  Yes, as kids a lot of those first jobs are simple department stores and restaurants, but being savvy to the company and what is going on can only help you.

Think about achievements of yours.  This is a question that could pop up that will point to your skills that can be applied to your job.  Go over these accomplishments now to avoid the "ums and ahs" later.

Practice your interview.  In my class, we did dry-run interviews with our instructor.  She asked us questions that she said could be part of our regular job interview and helped us with how to handle the situation.  Believe it or not, half of the questions she asked me were asked at about 75% of the interviews I went on.  It was so nice having that extra help.  Practice your own interview with family members and friends.  You can also try signing up with BetterTalking.com.  You can do a mock phone interview for free and then go over the recording to see what you need to work on.

- What to wear -
It is generally a very good idea to dress up for your job interview.  The best idea is to dress a bit nicer than you plan to dress when at work.  If you haven't yet, definitely check out their website and the organization.  You will get very good ideas on what to wear as you get a feel for the company.  Subdued is also best for women when it comes to make up and accessories.  You want what you wear to be complimentary not distracting.

Besides dressing nice you should also include a wrist watch.  I hadn't really thought about the significance of this since so many people now rely on a cell phone for time, but it is still a really important outfit feature.  A wrist watch subconsciously signals to employers that you are punctual and also that you value other people's time.

Okay this is really just a start, but I hope there are some tips that you can use or share.  :)
