Thrifty Tips for March 22, 2012

One of my favorite money saving treats is homemade granola bars.  I specifically am fond of the chewy variety.  I am going to share a recipe with you that is VERY simple and very easy to modify.  Check it out.

4 1/2 Cups of Rolled Oats
1 Cup of All Purpose Flour
1 Teaspoon Baking Soda
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
2/3 Cup Butter Softened
1/2 Cup of Honey
1/3 Cup of Brown Sugar
1 Cup of Dried Cranberries
1 Cup of Cinnamon Apple Sauce
1 Cup of Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips

The cranberries, raisins, chips and apple sauce are my add ins.  You can really do just about anything you want.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees and grease a 9 x 13 inch pan (I used a smaller glass pan for this batch because I wanted to make them thicker).  Also instead of grease I often use a piece of parchment paper.  It allows everything to lift off nicely.

Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, honey, butter, oats and vanilla into a large bowl and mix together.

Mix ingredients with large spoon until well blended.

Once well blended add applesauce and again mix well.

Once apple sauce is mixed in add your other dried fruits, nuts or chocolate chips.  I used dried cranberry and semi sweet chocolate chips.

Mix last ingredients well and then add to pan pressing down the mixture evenly.

Bake at 325 for 10 minutes and then remove from oven and firmly press the mixture down again with a spatula before putting back in the oven for 15 minutes.

Let set for 10 minutes or more to cool.  Once cooled, slice and enjoy.

These bars make a great snack, quick breakfast, and fabulous alternative to store-bought granola bars.  They also freeze easily and taste just as good once thawed out.  The best part is really you can add whatever you have on hand.  I have used canned pumpkin, pecans and chocolate chips.  You can throw in cereal, trail mix and more.  Really it is all up to your own imagination.  I hope you like it.  :)

Look for some amazing deals on name brand clothes, shoes, accessories and more?  Check out  I seriously love this place.  My husband picked up some awesome snow boots this week at a huge discount.  They still have an amazing boot sale going on.  I'll be honest, it has taken me a lot of wil power to not grab a pair.  I have literally browsed, picked out a pair, put them in my shopping bag and then chickened out, because I am saving up for a weekend of shopping madness at Goodwill!   Oh can shop at 6pm and go through Ebates for cash back!  Also has FREE SHIPPING!  Ready to shop now?  They have a jacket sale right now for $50 or less!

Thrifty Tips for March 15th

Lately I have been very focused on learning to make items for myself.  I have talked about making my own pizza crust, laundry detergent, fabric softener and today I have another item I wanted to share.  Chocolate syrup.  Chocolate syrup isn't insanely expensive, but it contains all kinds of ingredients that really I would rather avoid.  For example high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup (yep both), water, cocoa, sugar (yes so we have corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, and sugar...what?), less than 2% of potassium sorbate, salt, mono and diglycerides, xanthan gum, polysorbate 60, vanillan and artificial flavor.  I have been told that it is really a great idea to try to stick with foods that have 5 ingredients.  I will not get there right away, but I am definitely taking steps.  So here are the ingredients for chocolate syrup you can make at home:

Combine 1 Cup of Sugar and 1 Cup of Unsweetened Cocoa into a sauce pan and whisk together to remove cocoa lumps.

Once whisked together add 1 Cup of Water and 1/4 teaspoon of Salt.  Cook on low.

 Patiently cook and stir.

Keep on cooking and stirring continuously and let it come to a boil.

Keep boiling and allowing the syrup to thicken.

Once thickened take the pan off the heat and let it cool for 45 minutes to an hour.  Once cooled add in the 3 teaspoons of vanilla and mix well.  Now your syrup is ready to be placed in a container.  My son loves ketchup (we use Hunts because they don't use corn syrup) so I held onto one of the old containers just for this.

Tada!!!!!  Because I am on a diet, I hooked my hubby up with a glass of milk (almond) and the usual shot of chocolate syrup.  He said it tasted exactly like he is used to (he drinks a lot of homemade chocolate milk).

I love this recipe, because really if you have unsweetened cocoa, you can make this at any time.  You are saving yourself a lot of icky ingredients, perhaps an unnecessary trip to the store, and really expense, because all in all I have enough to make another batch with the cocoa I have left over. And I know that corn growers and the like say that corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup is safe in moderation, but the stuff is in everything.  So really how are we really supposed to moderate that intake other than to make what we can when we can?

On March 17th and 18th Burger King is celebrating St. Patrick's Day by offering one order of free value sized fries per customer as well as ketchup.  :)  Check out the tasty details below.  As always be sure to check with your Burger King.  It says no purchase necessary and no coupon needed, but you always want to make sure that the restaurant you go to is participating.

Noise Trade is one of my other favorite music stops.  They ask participants to share the music they download with others.  When you download music, you can leave the artist a "tip" for their music and pay what you would like or you can share the music with others to get the word out about the band or artist.  When I picked up my Third Day music, I found that Noise Trade was involved.  I have already picked up music from these artists, but I thought you might like to check out some of the great offerings they have.  Here are just a few:  Jars of Clay Spring Tour Sampler, Jimmy Needham, and OC Supertones.  Lots of great music to discover!

Thrifty Tips for March 1st

I've talked about making cleaners and whatnot, but I have never really shown how absolutely EASY it is. So let's get on about easy.

Here is everything you will need.

1 - Empty liquid laundry detergent containers.  Save them as you go or ask if any of your friends have any.

2 - A 5 gallon bucket preferably with lid.  Lowe's has these for a fairly minimal price.  Lids and buckets are sold separately.  It is an initial investment of less than $5.00, but you can use and use and use and use these buckets again and again.

3 - Grater.  I imagine most everyone has a cheese grater.  Nothing fancy.  Hopefully you have one on hand.

4 - Medium size pan that can hold five cups of hot water.

1 bar of Felz Naptha Soap (you can pick this up in the laundry aisle)
1 cup of washing soda (I used Arm & Hammer Super Washing soda you can pick this up in laundry aisle of most stores) NOT BAKING SODA
1/2 cup of Borax

Directions - Use a cheese grater to grate the bar of Fels Naptha into a sauce pan.  Watch your fingers.  My thumb knuckle got a good shred too!  Thankfully I was able to patch it up and not icky up my soap.

Add 5 cups of very hot water and heat the soap on water mixture on low until the soap is completely melted.

Fill a 5 gallon bucket half-way with water and add 1 cup of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda and 1/2 cup of Borax to the water, mix well until dissolved.  Once dissolved add melted soap mixture from sauce pan and stir it up.  Once mixed, cover and set overnight.

The soap will gel up.  It will not be a complete gel, but definitely gel-like.  Take your (clean) liquid detergent containers and fill with a half and half solution of water and your new soap.  This will make 10 gallons of laundry detergent.  Use 5/8 Cup for a top loading machine and 1/4 Cup for a front loading machine.  Be sure to shake up the jug before each use.

I had to share Life...Your Way with you today.  You can get lost here just looking at the great posts, but what I really want you to check out is there amazing printable list.  They have printables for everything!  One of my faves is perfect for keeping your budget in check by keeping waste in check it is the Printable Freezer Cheat Sheet.  Wonder how long the items you freeze will stay good.  Want to know what you can freeze?  This sheet will hook you up!   Follow the link below to get a look at all their free (yes totally free no obligation) printables.
