Back to Work --- Some More Thrifty Tips

Last night was another evening of staying up a bit late so I could get these tips in for work in the morning. If you are in AZ check us out some time...90.9 FM Radio Shine. If you aren't, you can check us out online at www.radioshine.org. Mind you, this is a Contemporary Christian radio station. So you will hear Christian music from artists like Casting Crowns, MercyMe, Jeremy Camp and more. You also hear me blabbing about deals and stuff. :)

Happy Thursday! The weekend is almost here!

Want to save money on gas? Ask directions. According to a British study, men drive an additional 276 miles a year because of not asking for directions which can waste up to $3000 in gasoline over a lifetime! I am not saying that women do not waste gas as well. I just don't have any numbers on that.

Meet Me On Monday - 10/25

I am absolutely adoring meeting all the bloggers that join in together at Meet Me On Monday which is hosted by the very lovely Java at Never Growing Old. It is pretty awesome learning more about each other, as well as learning that we all may be in different locales, many of us have quite a few things in common.

Aren't you interested in learning a little bit more about your fellow bloggers? Haven't you wanted to just share some silly little tidbits about yourself? Then come join the fun!

So here is a little more about me. :)

1. Do you sleep with a night light on?

Photobucket

No. I definitely do not. I thoroughly enjoy a dark and silent room. I have a husband who snores a bit so I deal with that by using earplugs (total and somewhat creepy silence yet I can still hear my alarm), and an eye mask can make for the total darkness. I also like to sleep with my head pillowized so there isn't much chance of light. When I was a child I was all about the night light, and in the 70s my parents hooked me up with this light which had a disk that would spin with the heat. Very trippy. It would change the room colors from green to blue to red to yellow and back again. No joke. At some point I got over the whole light thing. I don't exactly know when. I know when it wasn't, and that was sometime around when I read Stephen King's "The Shining." I had the nightlight on full force when I read that book. In fact if I could have made the room brighter when I read it, I would have!

Whoa...where was I?

2. What do you drink with dinner?

Photobucket

It depends on what we are eating. I jump from iced water to Koolaid. Every now and then I enjoy a Diet Coke. And in the summer it is all about fresh brewed iced tea!

3. Do you play the lottery? If so, how often?

Photobucket

Played it last night...lost. :( Dang lottery. My husband and I just play whenever we think about it. We were at the grocery store last night picking up some stuff to take to a friends house to watch MMA. While there we decided to pick up lottery tickets. Apparently about seven other people had the same idea just moments after us. It was a mad house, and to make matters worse, the dude next to me reeked of cigarette smoke. It is funny, I don't have issues with smoke (good thing since I worked in bars as well as a casino for years) it is the stale smell that gets me.

4. How often do you go to the grocery store?

Photobucket

I go to there at least once a week (usually take a cooler and hit them one after another). I shop all the loss leaders, use all my coupons, and menu plan like a champ. I have discovered that for me, it is THE best way to save money. Occasionally I will go to the store like I did the other night in order to pick up goodies for a hang-out night with friends.

5. Would you rather travel back in time 500 years or travel forward 500 years?

Photobucket

After looking at what was going down in 1510, I am going to have to say go forward 500 years. Well that is provided I can go back. With the great plague and whatnot going on, it wouldn't be too much fun, I'm guessing. Watching Henry the VIII rock the jousting world back in 1510 would have been pretty cool, but at 43...again, not as romantic as I might imaging in my teens. :) Knowing what I know now, I can't get past his rotundness and wife issues. ;)

Posting From My Day Job - Kelly's Thrifty Tips - Thrifty Giving

Once a week I do an on-air spot about saving money. This goes along with a blog post at our station's website. I post it here as well in case anyone is interested in the deals. And lately it has been so busy (we have a fundraiser coming up), I have had very little time to post here. Hope you find something you can use. :)

I have talked about ways to save money, win prizes and get free stuff. Right now I just wanted to mention a few ways to give. These are easy as can be and totally free.

Go to Target and make a pledge to take time to read with a child, and Target in turn will donate a book to children in need. You will be doing good in two ways. One by reading to a child and the second by getting a book into the hands of another child. Pretty cool. :) Follow the link below to make your pledge.

LINK:
Target Reading

If you head to The Hunger Site you can click and give. There are several causes that you can click on and each click will give a donation from sponsors. They also have items you can purchase there which enables the sponsors to give more. Again though, you don't have to pay a thing to give. You can give for hunger, literacy, child health, breast cancer, the rainforest, and animal rescue.

Goodsearch is a search engine that you may have heard about on Radio Shine. It is very easy to do, and can be a huge benefit to the nonprofit you search for. To do a search you can simply go to goodsearch.com and put in the name of your charity in the box where it asks who are you searching for. Put the charity name in and click verify. That is it! Then you just do your search. You don't have to constantly fill this in if you use it frequently. Each search will give a one cent donation to your charity. It may sound small, but it really adds up. For example, if a charity had 100 supporters who searched just twice a day, they would earn $730 for that charity.

One of the cool features is you can also check on your charity and see how much money has been raised so far.

Goodsearch also has
Goodshop which is a shopping link that allows you to shop online and a portion of those proceeds also go to your charity at no extra cost to you! These are stores you probably already shop at online. Stores like Amazon, 1-800-CONTACTS, Barnes & Noble, bebe, Best Buy and many more. PS Radio Shine is a Goodsearch Charity so feel free to search and bless today! :)

Goodsearch

Free Rice gives just that. Free rice. You go to the site and you answer the quiz vocabulary questions. For each right answer ten grains of rice is donated. Sounds like a small amount to you? Since its inception Free Rice has donated nearly 83 billion grains of rice. Read more here:

Follow Friday 40 and Over

Are you following me? Well thanks to Java at Never Growing Old I have the chance to introduce me and my blog and maybe you will. :) I am also going to get to know more of you!!!!! YAY!

If you are following me, you just might know that I have been outrageously busy the past few weeks. If you aren't or even if you are...I thought I'd share a few things with you.

I work at a radio station that happens to be an absolutely fabulous place to be. It can make for busy weekends when events roll around. The past two weekends were busy with the Women of Faith conference, Shepherding Your Teen conference, and actually this weekend will be the Make A Difference Tour (which I am actually not going to work because I am spent). I love getting the chance to go to these events. We get to meet listeners, share testimonies, and even have the opportunity to pray for others. Honestly, it rocks.

I love Fridays. Don't they just fill you with that WHOO HOOO feeling? Of course THIS Friday is special. It is special because it is payday! Yep, I like so many others get an extra thrill on payday. I also love Fridays because it means I can stay up late watching horror movies tonight! That is my favorite thing about October. Well...foliage is great too, but it just doesn't change like it did back East.

That brings me to another snippet about myself. I am originally from California, spent about 22 years in New England (living both in Rhode Island and Maine), moved back to California largely to escape one of the worst relationships EVER, met the man of my dreams (online - can you believe it?) and now live in Arizona.
Photobucket

*This is our first kiss as man and wife* P.S. We got married four days after my 40th birthday.

Okay... that is enough about me for now. If I continue, I wont get the chance to check out some blogs before bedtime which is 10:00 pm on work nights. Who would have thought I would conclude this little about me session with an inclusion of my bedtime? Is this what being over 40 has done to me? ;)

Have a great Friday!!!!!

A Little Bit of This and A Little Bit of That - Ways to Save

Photobucket

Good morning!!!!! I have some awesome things to share today. I have been looking up some ways to save money with cooking substitutes, play substitutes and even some grooming substitutes. I also have some more job hunting sites to share with you today, because you really just can't stop at seasonal sites. And finally I have some awesome freebies for you to peruse. Take a little stroll through this post. I think you will see something you'll like. :)

This week I made fried chicken for the first time! Let me tell you, I was beyond proud. At first I was a little scared as I had never made it before. Honestly it is amazing what you will try to make in order to give your husband a little smile! At least that is how I am.

See the plan went like this...Saturday afternoon my husband and I were driving home from the Shepherding Your Teen conference (which was amazing), and he told me he was craving fried chicken. This mainly translates to expensive fast food eating. In all fairness I should admit I do enjoy a little KFC now and then (though I was a bigger fan when they tried skinless fried chicken). At this time of my life, I just don't enjoy the prices. On a whim, I decided to make it myself. Truly I thought for a moment that I had made a big mistake, but once at home I found a great recipe and there really was no stopping me...I was committed. There was only one problem, I needed buttermilk. I don't buy a lot of buttermilk. No that isn't true. I NEVER buy buttermilk. I purposely avoid buttermilk and have ever since I was seven and mistook buttermilk for eggnog. BLECH. In fact, I don't even think I have seen buttermilk at my local store. They probably have it, but then again, maybe not. This is not an item that rings very high on my shopping list. I recalled a recipe that you can use to make a buttermilk substitute. I jumped on line and found it.

All this searching made me decide to show you a few substitutes that you can easily make in order to save money or make when you don't have certain things on hand.

Buttermilk - Mix one cup of milk with one tablespoon of lemon juice (we usually keep those plastic lemons full of juice in our fridge). Let sit for five minutes and then use as recipe requires. I used this in the fried chicken recipe and it was GREAT!

Mayonnaise - Honestly I wanted to do this because I have a thyroid condition and soy is bad for my thyroid. Soy has been a main ingredient in just about every mayonnaise I have found so I hunted for a recipe I could make on my own. Follow this link for very easy mayo instructions: Mayonnaise recipe

Fingerpaint - When my son was little, he just loved fingerpainting. It wasn't very expensive. We just ran out a lot. I wish I had these recipes back then: Make your own fingerpaint

Playdough - No matter how hard we tried, our Play-doh would always dry up or get mixed up into an ugly purplish-brown color, and no one would want to use it. So I got in the habit of making our own playdough. Here is a link to a very easy recipe: Make Your Own Playdough

Natural Dye for Playdough - Honestly food coloring always worked for us, but if you want to go that route there is a nice instruction guide here, and the colors are lovely: Natural dye for homemade playdough

Shaving Cream for ladies - Now this substitute has nothing to do with mixing an item with another. A while back I mentioned using conditioner for shaving cream (talking to you ladies out there). I have to say that this truly is one of the best substitutes I have ever come across. You don't even have to go pricey. Last week Suave shampoo and conditioners were on sale for 99 cents. I bought two huge bottles of strawberry conditioner and totally replaced my shower shaving cream. It smells great, works great and you don't step out of the shower with dry and itchy legs.

SHOPPING TIP - Did you know that you are more likely to purchase an item when you physically touch it? Ohio State University did a study that found that people who handled an item were more likely to buy it. It takes about 30 seconds to already "feel" like an item is yours. Keep that in mind the next time you go shopping especially Christmas shopping. :) Here is a link to an article from MSN about this study: If you touch it, you buy it

WEBSITE TIP- Where the jobs are

A few weeks ago I gave a couple of websites that are great for seasonal job hunting. Today I wanted to give you a website that is helpful for the job hunt in general. Check out Simplyhired.com. This is an amazing search engine that enables you to search for jobs in broad terms by state or more specific by keyword or category. Definitely give it a look and pass it along. It is a great tool.

LINK: Simplyhired.com

Another awesome site is LinkUp.com LinkUp goes though thousands of corporate sites and posts the jobs that you may not normally stumble on. Again it is another fabulous resource to take advantage of.

LINK: LinkUp.com

Remember you do not have to own a computer to use these sites. Simply go to the library where you can have access to computers and the internet for free.

Posting From My Day Job - Kelly's Thrifty Tips

Yep it is that time again. I have just about recovered from Women of Faith. Thankfully I felt just good enough to get things in order for my day job. I hope that you find a little something for you! I'll be posting more Saturday evening, as we have a special conference coming up THIS weekend called Shepherding Your Teen with the Youth Transition Network. I'll be posting about what I learned.

I thought it might be nice to do a little something about reusing an item or two.

If you are like me, you may have a wallet that is a little tight because of loyalty cards and membership cards. If you are also like me, it may be hard to find those cards when you need them. Here is an awesome tip. Take one of those Altoids mint tins and use it to hold your loyalty cards. This is a great place to keep them where the cards wont stretch out your wallet, and they will be easy to locate. These tins are also great to hold mini boo-boo kits. You can put in some bandages, aspirin, cough drops, Rolaids, and those little wet naps. They can also be used as mini play tins by adding some crayons and some folded up paper or even some Soduku sheets or crosswords and some golf pencils to keep you or the kids busy when waiting.

Mesh bags. I am always gathering up mesh bags from onions, nuts, and fruits. Here are a few ways to reuse them. You can use them as a scrubber for pots and pans, attach them to your gutter top to keep leaves out but water will still go in, you can also use them to hold small items that you are going to wash in the dishwasher like baby bottle nipples and caps, when you gather up all those itty bits and pieces of soap that kind of make the soap dish look creepy, pop them in a mesh bag and use that to wash extra dirty gardening hands or even scrub rough tootsies (doesn't that sound so much nicer than rough feet?) and if you want to offer the birds a little treat, you can place some suet in a mesh bag and easily hang it from a tree branch.

Ketchup bottles. Reuse cleaned ketchup bottles to make fun bath toys for the kids or make pancake or cupcake batter squeeze out without the mess.

Website Tips (A little website for the kids and one for you!)
-

If you have a child who is planning on taking the ACT, SAT or GRE you might want to direct them to Number2.com. Number2.com is a free site for SAT, ACT and GRE prep. They also have a great vocabulary builder section. Considering that my son is 15 and a sophmore in high school, we are definitely going to keep this site in my computer's bookmarks.

Meet Me On Monday - 10/04

Welcome to the 17th edition of
"Meet Me On Monday!"

For me this is my second round on the Meet Me On Monday blog hop, and I just had a ball! I was able to learn new things about some wonderful bloggers. I am really looking forward to this time around. Java at Never Growing Old came up with this fab way to get to know a little something about each other. :) What a doll. Here is a run down from Java:

Blogging is a funny thing...we tell our most intimate thoughts for all to read and yet most of the time I find myself sitting and wondering, "who is this person!?" I know them...but yet I don't know them! I want to know who the person is behind all those words so I thought of a great way for all of us to "meet" each other!

Every Sunday I will post five get to know you questions that you can copy and paste into your own Monday post and we can all learn a little more about each and every one of us!!

Questions:

1. What is the best dish you can make?

This took some thinking. I would have to say that my best dish is roast chicken with lemons. I found this recipe one day, and I make it at least once a month. It is ridiculously easy to make, looks gorgeous, and I can use the leftovers to make several different meals (example garlic chicken lettuce wraps, chicken and black bean quesadillas, chicken enchiladas, chicken salad and more) for my family. After the first meal, I literally pull off all the meat and use the carcass to make my own chicken stock (a real money saver).

2. How often do you change your sheets?

I would say we change our sheets every two weeks. The key is to not make your bed immediately after getting up. It allows the bed to air out and not reek. What a dorky tip! Truly though we do wait two weeks. That is unless my cat hurls on the bed. He is a cute but weird cat that only feels safe when hurling on carpet or bedding. Yep...what a dear. ;)

3. What is the longest car trip you have ever taken?

In one sitting? Because I have driven cross-country. That of course took a while. We often spent summers driving across the country doing the whole Griswold thing. :) I have had long commutes. I used to drive from my old job at the casino and it would take about an hour and a half. I also used to drive to Maine a lot when I lived in Rhode Island so my son could visit with family there. That would take about 4 hours. When I see my doctor in California, I drive to stay with my brother and sister-in-law which is about 6 hours. I guess I didn't really need to mention my old commute. :) Okay...take your pick. :)

4. What is your favorite fruit?

Nectarines are by far my faves. I love when they are just so ripe that you are pretty much wearing them as well as eating them. Strawberries rock too. I think I love all fruit for the most part.

5. Would you rather have breakfast for dinner or dinner for breakfast?

Now that I am no longer in college. I would prefer breakfast for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I really would rather stay away from dinner for breakfast which in my college years amounted to cold pizza or leftover lasagna. By the way, I pretty much rock at making lasagna too. Just tossing that out there fore ya! :)
