Thrifty Tips For April 26, 2011

QUICK TIPS

Heads up everyone!  May is on its way, and that means it is time to get some deals on Spring clothes.  The stores really need to make room for all the awesome summer clothes, and the sales and clearance deals are going to be great so don't miss out.

You say potato I say...oh yea...potato.  What can you do with a potato?  If you make mashed potatoes save the potato water.  Once it is cooled you can place your dull silverware in it, and leave it for an hour.  The tarnish falls off and you can rinse it clean with warm water.

The starch in a potato can help reduce swelling in your eyes.  I don't know if this is a lady thing or if everyone gets this swelling issue, but it plagues me!  The starch in a potato also is said to take the ouch out of sunburns by pureeing a potato and applying it to the burn.  I'm still a fan of vinegar for sunburn care though, and of course preventive measures like sunscreen.

One of my favorite savings bloggers Northern Cheapskate is having a giveaway for a $100 Walmart gift card giveaway.  The giveaway only runs until May 2nd.  Gift card giveaways are a great way to save some extra cash, and blogs are a great way to find them.  Northern Cheapskate is also just chock full of ideas for saving money so you will be very happy to drop by.  :)  Follow the link below to enter.

CRAFT GIFTS FOR MOM

Is your mom a music lover?  Pick up an old record at the thrift store and melt it into a bowl.  There are several ways to go about this, but the two most important things to remember are that this is NOT AN ACTIVITY FOR THE KIDS AND IT MUST BE DONE IN A WELL-VENTILATED ROOM.  OPEN ALL YOUR WINDOWS.  One is by using the oven.  AGAIN if you do this, be sure to well ventilate the room.  I chose to go the very hot water method and used a kettle, large bucket, gloves (a must because the records get VERY hot) and a pottery bowl.  One key thing to do is go purchase a record.  Do not go into mom's old records to do this craft.  You could end up melting something she really loves.  Oh and kids....a record looks like the photo below.

I picked this one up at Goodwill for 50 cents.  It was one huge album for the song from the movie "Mannequin."  Not something I was entirely concerned about melting.

For those of you who may not recall this film...that is a mannequin behind the guy.  Another one of those lighthearted 80's movies that I miss so much.  :)

I am going to give you a link to both methods.  Here are some shots of my finished projects.

Besides using the bucket as a base, when melted well, I also placed my record over this ceramic bowl to shape it a little farther.

This bowl here is actually from a record of "Music Box Dancer."  Now here is the kicker.  We have a friend who actually sells these at festivals for anywhere from $10 to $25 (I'm not suggesting this be your next big money maker...it wont be, but it is pretty cool for a gift).  Some are very rounded and smooth and some are wavy like this.  They are not for food.  I repeat NOT FOR FOOD.  But they are pretty neat for holding jewelry or you can spray paint them and make some cook art work with them.  I have even seen clocks.

Here are several instruction links.  Remember this is not for kids and you  must be in a well-ventilated room.

SODA CAN TOP TAB BRACELETS ETC

I found this cute little craft tutorial at Instuctables to make a soda can top bracelet, belt or even bookmark.  This is a great way to do a little extra recycling.  It is also pretty easy.  I made one with about 30 tops in 30 minutes.  Hopefully when I try again it wont take as long.
