Thrifty Tips For April 26, 2011

Heads up everyone!  May is on its way, and that means it is time to get some deals on Spring clothes.  The stores really need to make room for all the awesome summer clothes, and the sales and clearance deals are going to be great so don't miss out.

You say potato I say...oh yea...potato.  What can you do with a potato?  If you make mashed potatoes save the potato water.  Once it is cooled you can place your dull silverware in it, and leave it for an hour.  The tarnish falls off and you can rinse it clean with warm water.

The starch in a potato can help reduce swelling in your eyes.  I don't know if this is a lady thing or if everyone gets this swelling issue, but it plagues me!  The starch in a potato also is said to take the ouch out of sunburns by pureeing a potato and applying it to the burn.  I'm still a fan of vinegar for sunburn care though, and of course preventive measures like sunscreen.

One of my favorite savings bloggers Northern Cheapskate is having a giveaway for a $100 Walmart gift card giveaway.  The giveaway only runs until May 2nd.  Gift card giveaways are a great way to save some extra cash, and blogs are a great way to find them.  Northern Cheapskate is also just chock full of ideas for saving money so you will be very happy to drop by.  :)  Follow the link below to enter.

Is your mom a music lover?  Pick up an old record at the thrift store and melt it into a bowl.  There are several ways to go about this, but the two most important things to remember are that this is NOT AN ACTIVITY FOR THE KIDS AND IT MUST BE DONE IN A WELL-VENTILATED ROOM.  OPEN ALL YOUR WINDOWS.  One is by using the oven.  AGAIN if you do this, be sure to well ventilate the room.  I chose to go the very hot water method and used a kettle, large bucket, gloves (a must because the records get VERY hot) and a pottery bowl.  One key thing to do is go purchase a record.  Do not go into mom's old records to do this craft.  You could end up melting something she really loves.  Oh and kids....a record looks like the photo below.

I picked this one up at Goodwill for 50 cents.  It was one huge album for the song from the movie "Mannequin."  Not something I was entirely concerned about melting.

For those of you who may not recall this film...that is a mannequin behind the guy.  Another one of those lighthearted 80's movies that I miss so much.  :)

I am going to give you a link to both methods.  Here are some shots of my finished projects.

Besides using the bucket as a base, when melted well, I also placed my record over this ceramic bowl to shape it a little farther.

This bowl here is actually from a record of "Music Box Dancer."  Now here is the kicker.  We have a friend who actually sells these at festivals for anywhere from $10 to $25 (I'm not suggesting this be your next big money wont be, but it is pretty cool for a gift).  Some are very rounded and smooth and some are wavy like this.  They are not for food.  I repeat NOT FOR FOOD.  But they are pretty neat for holding jewelry or you can spray paint them and make some cook art work with them.  I have even seen clocks.

Here are several instruction links.  Remember this is not for kids and you  must be in a well-ventilated room.

I found this cute little craft tutorial at Instuctables to make a soda can top bracelet, belt or even bookmark.  This is a great way to do a little extra recycling.  It is also pretty easy.  I made one with about 30 tops in 30 minutes.  Hopefully when I try again it wont take as long.

Thrifty Tips for April 19th

I suppose the idea of beauty recipes start coming to mind when the weather begins to get warmer.  Winter-dried hair and skin need attention, and you can take care of all that without breaking the bank.  Here are two great recipes you can try out.

Moisturizing Banana Hair Mask
Dry hair can be repaired and moisturized with this awesome mask.
1 Ripe Banana (the riper the better)
1 Tbs Honey
1 Tbs Olive Oil

Whip ingredients together until smooth and creamy (make sure it is really creamy and not clumpy).  Apply mixture to damp hair and thoroughly massage in.  Cover your hair with plastic wrap (I usually put a towel over this as well) and let sit for 30 to 60 minutes.  This is a great time to catch up on your reading.  Rinse thoroughly.

Yogurt/Honey/Banana Facial

Now this might sound weird but bananas are also amazing on the skin.  Yogurt contains lactic acid which will smooth and soften the skin, honey is a natural antiseptic and...yay!!!! tightens pores!  Add in the nutrient rich banana and you are good to go!  Check out the recipe.

1/2 of a Ripe Banana
2 Tbs Plain Yogurt
1 Tbs Honey

First be sure to mix the yogurt thoroughly before measuring out for the mask.  Blend all ingredients together and apply to the face avoiding the eye area.  Leave mixture on face for 20 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.

Thrifty Tips for April 12

When you are out and about you may find the need to find a WiFi spot.  WiFi Finder is the perfect app for you.  Search out the hotspots for where you are or where you are going.  After the app finds the spots, you can simply save the ones you may use to your favorites.  That way you know where to go when you are out and about which comes in handy if you don't have WiFi.  This app is available at Android Apps and iTunes.

This is the story of my life.  My personal motto back when I had one (I'm talking AOL time) was "Where are my keys?"  I have pretty much gotten this whole thing down finally.  It took me many years, but I learned the key was to basically put my keys in the same spot.  Now my personal phrase or motto is "Can you call my cell phone?"  This is because I will get involved with something while holding my phone, and distractedly set it down.  Basically it might as well be in an abyss.  If my husband is home, I would simply ask him to call my phone.  It is effective but embarrassing.  If he isn't home, it is a little more complicated.  Well, not anymore.  Now I simply go to, enter in my phone number, and it rings.  Of course you do need to remember not to put your phone on silence.  :)

The summer is coming and at the very least we have been experiencing fluxes of warmer weather.  What does that translate to?  Shedding.  I thought now would be a nice time to share some pet hair help.

I have a long hair and a short hair cat.  The long hair is a tough customer because she has so much hair, but it does come off in clumps.  The short hair just leaves hair EVERYWHERE.  You can purchase all kinds of fancy doodads to clean up that hair, but really, it is not necessary.  Here are a few tips.

1  - Remove pet hair from furniture, clothing, even carpeting by donning dish washing gloves (yep those big honkin' gloves mom used to where) and rub the fur right off.  It seriously works great.  You can also use gardening gloves if they have the little rubber nubs on them.

2 - A long squeegie also works like a charm to remove fur from rugs just like a push broom.  It seriously works remarkably well, and you can pick one up fairly cheaply.

3 -  Brushing daily helps as well of course.  One extra trick is to dampen your hands and pet and then use a comb or brush on them.

4 - Dampen a dish towel or old hand towel and repeatedly rub the pet with the towel.  It will accumulate a bunch of hair and you wont.  :)

Lowe's Build and Grow Clinic will teach the kids how to build a Game Show Chip Drop Game on Saturday, April 14th.  It is basically like a mini plinko game and very cute.  Follow the link to see locations near you, and sign up now.  Spaces are limited.  If you enter your email, you will see how many spaces are left.  Don't forget to sign the kids up for Saturday, April 28ths Build and Grow Clinic, because the kids will build a little terrarium.  What a great start to learning how to grow yummy goodies in the warm months!

Thrifty Tips for April 5

I love ways to earn while you do what you would normally do.  Like earning cash back for shopping online via Ebates, or giving money to your favorite charity by searching and shopping through sites like GoodSearch, downloading coupons and building up cash via SavingStar.  It is always nice getting an extra perk or two.  Because I am a perks lover, I was very excited to learn about CheckPoints.  CheckPoints is the app that pays you back.  How it works is you download the app to your smartphone and check in to the stores that you shop at.  The app will tell you what you can scan to get points.  In addition to points you also get a coin that you can use for a game.  The points add up and you can redeem them for prizes from gift certificates to gift cards.  There are many, many options.  Check them out today.
