Giveaway - Living Rich For Less by Ellie Kay

Photobucket

I am just absolutely crazy about Ellie Kay. She really knows from what she speaks when it comes to saving money. She has been one of my inspirations for living beneath my means and giving since I first discovered her as a single mom. Back then I REALLY needed to know how to save and spend wisely. Oh heck, I still cling to her advice now.

Book Summary (From the back cover): With lively humor, proven know-how, and practical principles for financial health, Living Rich for Less helps you stretch your dollars to realize the lifestyle of your dreams. Ellie Kay's entertaining and enlightening examples show you simple steps to give, save, and spend smart. her three main principles are under-girded by dozens of effective rules and hundreds of Cha Ching Factor TM tips that keep or put money in your pocket.

Ellie knows what it's like to be financially-strapped or struggling. She went, within two and a half years, from being $40,000 in consumer debt to being completely debt-free; within fifteen years she shares how she was able to pay cash for eleven different cars, give away three of those cars, buy two five-bedroom houses, take wonderful vacations, and support more than thirty non-profit organizations, giving away more than $100,000.

Living Rich for Less helps anyone get there in our taxed-out, maxed-out times. Because financial security doesn't mean just genuine prosperity, but being able to live luxuriously, give generously, and care for yourself as well as those around you.

This book really is incredible. What I like about Ellie Kay is she is down to earth, and she speaks to you in a way that you can understand. Her concepts are not complicated. They are completely doable. She has proven you can do it.

Ellie has a great website that has wonderful tools and information. Be sure to check it out, because I am sure that there will be something for everyone. I am particularly crazy about her tool center. Go check it out at www.elliekay.com.

This sounds like a great book that all of us can use in this economy. One thing that has saved my family money is by purchasing a quarter side of beef from a farmer we know. Not only is the price a little less, but I make less frequent trips to the store that keep me from buying other items I don't need.

What a great book to feature at this time. I love it. I have been frugal all my life and learned this from my mother who had to be thrifty due to her circumstances. I frequent the library and have all my life, I shop when there are deep discounts, I make stews and soups which last and are healthy and economical.

I make my own pizzas at home. The dough is super easy to make in the stand mixer and takes no time at all. Sure beats the expensive and limp stuff from the local pizza place!

Thanks for the e-mail, too. I did post this at Win a Book... once we got home from the pool!

Once you're tracked your money for a month or more, identify areas where you can trim spending. Make coffee at home, instead of stopping at Starbucks, for example.

Use your local library to get reading materials, borrow movies, use the computer, and have free entertainment for the children and the family. The price is certainly right -free!

Make your gifts instead of buying them. Cook, bake, grow plants from seeds, or make arts and craft items. It will certainly make your gift special and from the heart when you make it yourself.

Grow your own fresh herbs and perhaps a few veggies like green onions and cherry tomatoes. It doesn't take much room - you can grow them in a small planter. It's a nice hobby, too!

If you have small children, start a baby-sitting co-op with friends. You can trade baby-sitting for each other's children in your free time and your children have some new playmates.

Oh goodness...so many things I could put!
-The hubby and I took Dave Ramsey's "Financial Peace University" class to get a real handle on our finances
-I am a coupon clipper
-We bring our own lunch to work
-We split meals at restaurants when we do go out (only if we have a coupon or gift card)
-We keep a budget and do it every month
-I don't buy any clothes at full price, on off the sale rack
-We don't get gas unless we have a coupon (which there are many out there these days!)

I'm sure you've heard many of these, but they are a few things we do around our house.

Eat bacon...oh, no, wait, that was the other day!
Since I retired in June (a scary thing to do but the time was right after 37 years teaching) I find that staying home saves MUCH money. Every time I go out, I wind up spending money I didn't need to so if I have errands to run, I try and combine them on one day to save on gas and also stick to just those errands.

Bingo said...

Also, not working now, means no dry cleaning costs or minimal...and I wear things I can wash when possible. So if working, when you buy clothes, try and buy things that don't need to be dry cleaned.

Bingo said...

I now watch for specials or coupons and use them when I can which I never did when working as there wasn't time or so I thought as I had to do what was convenient.

Cut out the special coffee drinks...sure they are great but what a treat it is when I have one only once in a while instead of several times a week and I don't really miss them...love that water especially in this heat.

Use lowest cable bill I can meaning not subscribing to special channels that half the time we never watched any way...read instead..AND call the cable company and tell them the price is too high and you are going to buy a dish and see what happens. I got my bill reduced by $10 a month without any changes AND one month free.

I also am of course a follower who would love the book as I know there is lots more we can do to save.
