Saturday Christian Fiction Carnival is now....Faith and Fiction Satruday -- Topic: The First Christian Book You Remember Reading

Saturday Christian Fiction Carnival is now Faith and Fiction Saturday. If you would like to join in the fun and fellowship please check out My Friend Amy's blog. She has really been awesome about posting a new question every week.

So directly from My Friend Amy:

We have a new title! Faith 'n Fiction Saturday won by a long shot.

Now, if somebody wants to make us a button, we can all be super happy! :)

Today's Question:

We all come to faith in Jesus at different times in our lives and we all come to Christian fiction at different times, too! What's the first book in the Christian fiction genre you can remember reading? What was your impression of it? Did it make you want to read more or less?

This took me a while. One of the first books I had read that was Christian was not Christian fiction. So at first I was like ready to talk about The Hiding Place, and then a little voice said "Dude, that wasn't fiction." It is a great book though, and I strongly recommend it.

So now back to the first Christian fiction book I ever read. This was This Present Darkness by Frank E. Peretti. It was a book recommended to me by my son's grandmother. She was at the time my boyfriend's mom, and we went to the same Biblie study. It was a pretty intense story involving spiritual warfare, and I totally got into it. I liked it immediately and borrowed the sequel Piercing the Darkness next. I thought it was a good depiction of what it must be like in the dimension (for lack of a better word) where angels and demons might battle.

After reading these two books, I didn't run out and buy more Christian fiction. Peretti's books weren't really like the other Christian fiction out there, and I really didn't find anything similar. Plus, how many spiritual warfare books are you going to read without it kind of impacting you in ways that might be not the best? Sounds weird, but I was and am strongly effected by what I read, and if I read too much of anything like that, it would be something I dreamt about, and that would be closely in the form of a nightmare. So it did make me want to read more Peretti, and I did by reading Tilly which was a wonderful story as well. It did not send me on a quest for more Christian fiction. That took a while longer.

My taste for Christian fiction has gotten stronger through the years, because just like Christian music, the fiction has gotten better. Maybe better isn't really the word I am looking for. It has gotten broader. I can find the genres I enjoy in Christian fiction. If I am in the mood for suspense, I can find it in Christian fiction where before I may not have been able to find it so easily. If I want something romantic, I can find that too, and it doesn't have to only take place in another time.

Maybe I haved finally grown up. :)

Hey, I like your little voice that says "Dude..."!

Believe it or not I havent read any Frank Peretti, but he is on my list. Those both sound like great stories that I'd like.

I know what you mean about reading too much of that kind of thing. It'd have the same effect on me.

I wouldnt have cared much for the older Christian fiction, I'm afraid. I couldn't STAND older Christian music, even from the 90's. I hated it! But I love what's out there now.

Maybe I'm growing up too. *sniff*

(PS I'll have to reply to your email on Monday)

I think one of the first Christian books I remember reading was a Frank Peretti book.
My husband loved them, I didn't care for them as much. He's a good writer, they were just not my favorite genre.

My dad has loved Frank Peretti's books for YEARS - he's always trying to get me or my husband to read them. I guess I was always worried I would find them scary or boring, but maybe I should give them a try - a few people today have talked about them.

I haven't read any of Frank Peretti's books, but I have read The Hiding Place. I've seen the movie too, and once, many years ago, saw Corrie ten Boom speak. She was in her 80s, and she was electric!

I didn't hear that voice! I totally forgot about the Frank Peretti books. They scared me and got me really praying.

I remember reading the Peretti books when I was in junior high. I should go back and reread them since I'm sure I didn't grasp a lot of what was happening in the stories. :) The Hiding Place is an excellent story too. Loved it. :)

Hey Dude,
I'm a Cali girl . . born and bred!
I loved your answer! I know after I read This Present Darkness I wanted to find Peretti and ask him to write "faster" there was just nothing like his books available. Now it seems we have so much to choose from, we'll never get it all read. ;)

You've made me want to go out and get that book. Good answer!

Did you know that I've never read those??? And I agree about how Christian fiction and Christian music both have gotten better.
